Many are unemployed and have been for months. Others have lost their homes and are staying with friends or in shelters. Some have depleted their savings and are going into debt. Several children and families—once solidly middle class—now rely on food stamps and free school lunches for their meals. Others lost their jobs through no fault of their own.

Community Action of Southern Kentucky will call attention to these and similar problems facing low-income residents of the 10 county Barren River area throughout May during National Community Action Month. National Community Action Month highlights Community Action Agencies’ work helping millions of families and individuals escape poverty each year.

Community Action’s plans locally for this special commemoration include:

Community Action Night at the Bowling Green Hot Rods on May 15th. The Hot Rods will present a check to Community Action Southern Kentucky for funds raised from the night’s tickets sales.

May 23rd – Healthy Aging Conference presented by the Barren River Healthy Aging Coalition at Carroll Knicely Conference Center.

May 23rd– Citizens First Bank presents Community Action of Southern Kentucky’s 6th Annual Charity Golf Classic at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Russellville, KY. Fees are $60/person with breakfast/lunch provided. Winning teams will receive cash prizes or gift certificates! WNKY NBC 40.1 and CBS 40.2 are the Exclusive TV Media Sponsors.

Other activities in May include: a social media awareness movement (#Communityaction) on May 8th on Twitter, Senior Center activities to celebrate Older Americans Month and Senior Corp week, recruitment of 3 and 4 year old children for Head Start programs in the 10 counties and awarding of post secondary educational scholarships.

“People across the country are feeling discouraged due to the troubling economy. “Long before the Great Recession, Community Action has been assisting people during their most difficult personal and financial situations and helping them see that there is light at the end of the tunnel. For some, comprehensive resources and guidance lead to economic stability and opportunities that change their lives. Other times, services, such as senior services, in home family services help keep people and families self-reliant,” said Cheryl Allen, CEO/Executive Director of Community Action of Southern Kentucky.

“Services offered by Community Action of Southern Kentucky and Community Action Agencies across the country are so critical, especially when you’ve got millions of people facing an uncertain economic future,” said Don Mathis, President and CEO of the Community Action Partnership. “These are people who worked hard and played by the rules, but now the pressures of long-term unemployment, foreclosures, and dwindling savings are putting a tremendous strain on them. Programs like Community Action are vital to ensuring that the American Dream remains a reality.”

The national office of the Community Action Partnership designates May as National Community Action Month to recognize Community Action Agencies’ work fighting poverty on the local level. Each year, Community Action Agencies help 20 million Americans achieve and maintain financial stability through programs such as Head Start, Weatherization, job training and placement, financial education, housing, energy assistance, and transportation.

Community Action programs provide cost effective services that provide opportunities for individuals and families to be self-reliant. Last year through Community Action of Southern Kentucky, 505 families received emergency food and shelter assistance, 904 households started a vegetable garden, 25 people received educational scholarships, 163 homeless families gained housing, 260 children were able to remain in their home or returned home, 301 homes were weatherized, hundreds of seniors received services and opportunities that helped them maintain independence and thousands of households received heating assistance.
