CASOKY Seeks Board Members

Do you want to make a positive difference in your community? Community Action of Southern Kentucky needs individuals who will be a voice for the citizens of Allen, Barren, Edmonson, Logan, and Simpson counties as volunteer members of the Agency’s Board of Directors.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, a resident of the county he/she represents, and be able to travel to Bowling Green to attend Board meetings. Agency employees or their immediate family members are not eligible to apply.

Is Your Preschooler Getting Enough Sleep?

Children are spending more & more time on the couch, in the house, and on some type of electronic device. There is a recent research study that indicated that children today are 4 times less active than their grandparents when they were children. Inactivity and overuse of electronics can result in sleep disturbances, irritability, and inhibited ability to focus.

Are parents reporting that their child is having trouble sleeping, concentrating, or is slow to get up in the morning? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the following sleep needs for young children:

  • 1-3 years old 12-14 hours per day
  • 3-4 years old 10-11 hours per day

Further, the AAP recommends that children ages 3-18 be limited to 2 hours of electronic entertainment per day. When children are looking at electronic screens, they should wait at least 1 full hour before going to bed so that their young brains have sufficient time to slow down and settle down.

Children's brains are more sensitive to environmental influences than adults. Here are some signs that children are not getting good, restorative sleep.

  • Complaints of not being able to get to sleep
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Poor memory, poor focus
  • Difficulty retaining learned skills or information
  • Hard to wake up
  • Irritability and meltdowns 

What is your child's bedtime routine? How much time does your child spend on electronics at home?

Depending on your answers, what may look like an emerging behavioral issue may actually be a result of not enough restorative sleep or simply not enough hours of sleep. Make sure your child is getting the recommended amount of sleep!

Kindergarten Readiness

School Readiness Means….that a child enters school (kindergarten) ready to engage in and benefit from early learning experiences that BEST promote the child’s success.

We believe that to be truly kindergarten-ready, young children need instruction and guidance in two categories of skills, not just one: developmental readiness and academic readiness.

Developmental Readiness is made up of the skills that allow children to function in a school environment. Can children play attention, work well with others, exhibit self-regulation, and communicate their thoughts and feelings.? Critical for success in kindergarten and beyond, these skills enable children to focus on other learning tasks, and encompass: social emotional development, language development, and gross/fine motor skills.

Academic Readiness is made up of the skills that allow children to successfully learn foundational academic concepts and skills. Do children have an awareness of concepts of print, alphabet knowledge, and numbers? Have children been exposed to complex vocabulary words and rich content area topics? Equally critical for success, these skills serve as the academic foundation for all the learning yet to come, and encompass: emergent reading, mathematics, science, and other content areas.

2016 Partnerships for Prevention Conference

All parents and professionals are welcome to attend this FREE conference on April 19th from 8am to 4:30pm.

Families face many challenges and barriers which often interfere with building strong children. Join us as we acknowledge Child Abuse Prevention Month and learn strategies to strengthen families and be inspired to offer the support and services parents need to raise strong, healthy, and successful children.
