Volunteer Info

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance(VITA) Program provides FREE tax preparation! Thousands of people take advantage of this program and our need for volunteers is growing! We have volunteer positions consisting of Tax Preparer, Site Greeter and Ambassador in Warren County. If you seek to help low-moderate income families in meeting their tax reporting requirements to the IRS, please contact us!

Tax preparers are responsible for preparing basic income taxes. You work with taxpayers to ensure that they file a complete and accurate tax return. You will receive instruction on interviewing and using tax preparation software. Preparers use interpersonal skills, basic computer skills, and IRS resource guides to help them apply their knowledge of tax law. Every preparer must complete the BASIC certification through Link and Learn before filing taxes for the coalition. To learn more about how to certify, call 800-928-1183, or visit the IRS website, and type, "Link & Learn” into the search field.

Greeters welcome customers as they come in, give them the correct forms to fill out, and they help people complete those forms when needed. Site greeters may be asked to answer phone calls when the tax preparers are busy with customers. This job is a great way for new volunteers to familiarize themselves with how VITA Sites are set up and operated. And while greeters are a vital part of each site, they do not have to get certified in order to volunteer! All you need to get started is a short training session provided by your site supervisor.

Coalition ambassadors help distribute information before and during tax season. Since the BRABC cannot compete with the elaborate marketing campaigns many tax preparation firms implement, we rely heavily on our ambassadors to hand out flyers and door hangers to get the word out. Ambassadors have a direct impact on how many people find out about our services. We usually need at least 30 ambassadors each year to cover the areas that we want to target. Light travel is usually required.
